Five musicians from Seattle – singer Chris Cornell, guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Matt Cameron – got together in 1991 to form a group known as Temple of the Dog. The band released a self-titled LP but never went on tour. Now, in honor of the album’s 25th anniversary, they will embark on a five-date tour planned for this fall. Chris Cornell said in a statement that they decided to reunite to pay homage to the band and to see what it would be like to tour together.

Special Editions of Album to Be Released

UMe will release a 25th anniversary edition of the LP on September 30. It was remixed by Brendan O’Brien, who has collaborated with both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Four versions will be available: a four-CD Super Deluxe package, a double LP, a two-CD set, and a single CD. The CDs are now available for pre-order.

The Super Deluxe and two-CD editions will include five outtakes from the studio, as well as seven demo recordings. The demos include two songs, “Angel of Fire” and “Black Cat,” that did not appear on the album. The Super Deluxe set also includes a DVD with live footage, music videos, and other features.

History of Temple of the Dog

Cornell decided to form Temple of the Dog after his friend and roommate, Andrew Wood, who was the lead singer for Mother Love Bone, died of an overdose. The band included Gossard and Ament, who were also members of Mother Love Bone, McCready, and Cameron, who was a member of Soundgarden along with Cornell. Gossard, Ament, and McCready were also forming a new group at the time that would come to be known as Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam’s lead singer, Eddie Vedder, provided backup vocals for three songs on Temple of the Dog.

Cornell said Temple of the Dog was formed to record an album simply for the band members’ own enjoyment. They were not worried about what anyone except them and their friends would think of it.

Although Temple of the Dog never went on tour in the 1990s, they did perform together several times. They played together in Seattle in November and December 1990. Cornell performed with Pearl Jam for two shows at PJ20 in Wisconsin in 2011 and at Neil Young’s Bridge School benefit show in 2014. Temple of the Dog also played two songs at Benaroya Hall in Seattle last year.
