The music industry made $43 billion in 2017, but artists only took away 12% of it

The music industry made $43 billion in 2017, but artists only took away 12% of itDJ SNAKE Photo By Eva Blue 07

Musicians’ struggles in today’s industry are well-documented. Royalties have plummeted as a result of downloading or streaming, with extended touring taking place of beatmaking as the prime kind of income. On top of all this, the teams behind these artists also have to make a living, cutting profits further.

It comes as no surprise, then, that Citigroup’s latest report on the music industry economy asserts that musicians only took home 12% of the $43 billion in revenue generated industry-wide in 2017. The cycle is a cruel one — creators often rely on publishers, tech companies, and other team members to help get their message out and allow them to make a living through their craft in the first place. However, the cost of this success is that these outside parties suck up greater amounts of income in return.

Citigroup didn’t paint an overly grim picture with its reporting. In fact, it posed potential paths of redistributing some of the revenues to the musicians that helped generate it in the first place. It foresaw two potential vertical integrating models, with one pointing to promoters and platforms like Spotify merging together. Or, Spotify and its ilk will cross into the label space as another form of vertical integration that would benefit artists. Finally, Citigroup also posed a horizontal model where different distribution platforms merge with one another.

Also, the fact that artists are taking a 12% stake in the industry is good news in itself — in 2000, that number was at 7 %. The report shows this to the increase of royalties via streaming subscriptions, and also growth within the concert business. Only time will tell how the industry evolves to tip the financial scales back in the artists’ favors.

Lance Bass (almost) bought the Brady Bunch house. Yes, the NSYNC guy.

UPDATE Aug. 5, 2018, 10:11 a.m. ET

It’s not happening, folks.

Although Lance Bass informed the world on Saturday that his offer to purchase the Brady Bunch house had been “accepted,” he followed up that announcement with a statement overnight making it clear that he had spoken too soon. The home isn’t his. In fact, he’s getting the feeling now that he might have been nothing more than a pawn in a bid to drive up the house’s value.

” The next day, due to’ unforeseen circumstances,’ the same agent informed us that there’s another Corporate Buyer( Hollywood studio) who are interested the house at any cost ,” he wrote.” We were prepared to go even higher but[ were] entirely discouraged by the marketers[ sic] agent,[ who said] they will outperform any bid with unlimited resources .” Read more …

Mike Shinoda to headline fall 2018 North American Monster Energy Outbreak Tour

Featured image

Mike Shinoda has been tapped as the headliner of the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour this fall, marking his first full-scale solo trek of North America.

The vocalist and multi-instrumentalist released his first solo album, Post Traumatic, in June. The tour announcement comes a little more than a year after Shinoda’s Linkin Park bandmate Chester Bennington took his own life.

Along with performing, Shinoda will present art pieces that he created while making Post Traumatic at each stop on the tour.

“Listening to a recorded song is not the same as experiencing that song live on stage,” explained Shinoda in a press release. “Similarly, seeing a painting in an album or book is not the same as seeing the original, in person. In sharing a live experience with you, my hope is to inspire questions, answers, and reflection — not only about my story, but about your own. The search for meaning is boundless, and art is often one of our best vehicles.”

The trek kicks off October 10th in Montreal, Canada, and wraps November 17th in Silver Spring, Michigan. Tickets for the tour go on sale to the public this Friday, with various pre-sales beginning tomorrow. More information and ticket links can be found at the official Monster Energy Outbreak Tour page.

Chainsmokers Bring Millennials to Final Atlantic City Beach Concert, Officials Hope to Continue Live Nation Partnership

The Chainsmokers brought thousands of people to the Atlantic City beach on Sunday afternoon, which marked the last of six concerts produced by Live Nation in what was a three-year, $6 million deal with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA).

The 4:15 pm Sunday afternoon show was to culminate a star-packed concert weekend in Atlantic City, but after Demi Lovato’s Friday show was canceled due to the singer’s apparent overdose last week, The Chainsmokers were the biggest headliners in town.

Live Nation booked Cheat Codes, an electronic music DJ trio, in Lovato’s place, and made the concert a free event. Demi ticketholders were able to receive refunds or attend The Chainsmokers concert.

With perfect weather, the beach was packed on Sunday. Attendance estimates have not yet been released, but the show seemed to satisfy Live Nation’s contract with the CRDA that requires the concert organizer to book acts that draw 30,000 or more people.

Millennial Impact

Chainsmokers Tickets

The Chainsmokers attracted a demographic long-sought by Atlantic City casinos: the millennial.

Numerous studies have shown that the 18- to 34-year-old doesn’t enjoy slot machines nearly as much as their parents and grandparents. A report from YouGov, a research firm in London, said recently that nearly one in two millennials even find casinos depressing.

“Everyone seems really positive about that,” Live Nation Philadelphia President Geoff Gordon told the Press of Atlantic City about the show bringing in younger people. The millennials might not necessarily be rushing to the slot machines after the concert, but they spent money on food and beverages, lodging, and other entertainment.

“We’re looking at a longer-term promotion of the city as a resort and as a destination,” CRDA Executive Director Matt Doherty explained. “It’s an attempt to expand the market of people who come to Atlantic City with a non-gaming event. The more people that come, the more revenue generated.”

Continuing Partnership

With the openings of Hard Rock and Ocean Resort, Atlantic City needs more visitors, and lots of them, to support being a nine-casino town. With commercial casinos now in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York, the necessity for east coasters to travel to New Jersey’s gambling hub to spin a slot machine are no longer.

Hard Rock and Ocean Resort are betting on entertainment and experiences as catalysts to return visitation to numbers experienced in decades prior.

The rock ‘n’ themed casino plans to host live entertainment nightly, and opened with A-listers Carrie Underwood and Pitbull. Ocean Resort welcomed celebrities Mark Wahlberg and Jamie Foxx during its debut festivities and hopes its Topgolf Swing Suite lounge, as well as its smoker-friendly casino area, will be enough to keep the resort busy.

The CRDA, the state agency tasked with investing in projects that benefit the city’s economy and development, says it hopes the summer beach concert series continues next year.

“I believe it will go forward,” Doherty stated. “There may be some alterations to the concerts … but I think it’s a beneficial relationship to advancing tourism in Atlantic City.”

Sir Elton John’s Three-Year Global Tour: Tickets & Pricing @blog.buytickets.com

download (1)

As promised here is part 2 of my Elton John blog.  I don’t know about you, but I just love Elton John’s music, his down to earth personality, he is a family man, and seems to be a best friend.  (Well that’s how I feel).

“This is the end.”  He’s not kidding.  “My priorities are in my life are now my children, my husband, and my family, I want to be home.”  Elton John claimed in 1977 to retire only returning 2 years later.  But this time after 300 scheduled performing dates over the next 3 years he will retire #exhausted.

Elton John’s  tour is big business

Elton John’s tour is big business, which will sell around 4,947,824 tickets grossing $590,709,626.  There is one thing to say about Elton John, he is not shy about his ticket pricing.  It is said that he is not good on his numbers and $ reporting. Anyway, with farewell tour announcements, it does put a demand on concert ticket sales.  What a great retirement plan!

Elton John’s Aids Foundation

Elton John’s Aids Foundation is a nonprofit established in 1992 in the United States, and 1993 in the United Kingdom.  The foundation has raised over $200 million dollars to support HIV related programs in over fifty-five countries.  In 1993 the organization began hosting the annual Elton John Aids Foundation Academy Award Party.

70 years old and still going strong

At 70 Elton is still going strong with his music, costumes, and spirit.  His love for life has been enhanced by his marriage to David Furnish.  David was born in 1962 in Toronto Canada.  He graduated from university in 1985 in business advertising.  After working in advertising with Ogilvy & Mather he transferred to London.  He then went into filmmaking, directing Elton John’s documentary “Tantrums & Tiaras” in 1997. David serves on the board for Elton John’s AIDS Charity and is a columnist for GQ.

Elton and David have known each other and dated for 24 years.  In May 2005 Elton popped the question at a dinner party.  In December of 2005, they entered into a civil partnership, taking place in Windsor.  They have two children, Zachary and Elijah, both by the same surrogate.  In 2014 Elton John and David Furnish were able to convert their civil partnership into marriage due to the new gay marriage legislation.  Their marriage was on their 9th anniversary on December 21st, 2014 in Windsor.
