The History of Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Red Rocks Amphitheatre stands out among outdoor amphitheaters by combining breathtaking natural landscape with superb acoustics. Situated west of Denver near Morrison and 6,450 feet above sea level, this 868-acre park represents the meeting of Great Plains and Rocky Mountains – and hosts concerts as well as hikes through meadows where visitors may spot dinosaur fossils!
“Garden of the Angels,” as local indigenous people have long called it, features rock formations characterized by rust-colored sandstone. During Franklin Roosevelt and Congress’ New Deal programs aimed at aiding America out of its Great Depression-induced slump, workers of Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration began carving away at them into what has now become an open-air amphitheater.
Since that time, the venue has seen legendary performances by performers ranging from Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong to Jimi Hendrix and Jethro Tull. Additionally, in 1969 Pink Floyd performed under a temporary roof that collapsed during a song, sending fans scrambling for safety while creating an unforgettable experience for audiences.

Parking is complimentary with concert tickets, with lots opening two hours before show time. Upper North lots tend to fill quickly while Lower South lots provide more parking spaces but may require longer walking distance to reach the venue.
Red Rocks parking lots do permit tailgating, but be mindful to abide by all guidelines and regulations. Glass containers are prohibited while portable heaters should be avoided to minimize noise pollution. Always respect your neighbors while keeping noise to a minimum!
