Maren Morris is a 26-year-old up-and-coming country music singer and songwriter who has already been working in the music business for 15 years. She will soon be opening on tour for Keith Urban and just released her major label debut album, Hero, on June 3.

She enjoys a blend of classic country music inspired by legends such as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, as well as 1990s pop by artists like Ginuwine. Morris is inspired by the diversity of musical styles and points of view in country music today.

Breaking into the Music Business

Morris grew up in Arlington, Texas and gained confidence at an early age through singing and performing in her community. She began performing in clubs and honky-tonks at the age of 11 and released her first independent album, Walk On, when she was 15. It was followed by All That It Takes in 2007 and Live Wire in 2011. By the time she turned 21, Morris had been touring across the state of Texas for a decade.

Becoming a Professional Songwriter

Morris visited Kacey Musgraves in Nashville several years ago and was inspired to try to become a professional songwriter. She saved money and moved to Nashville three years ago to pursue a songwriting career. She wrote songs for artists such as Tim McGraw and Kelly Clarkson, but her publisher had trouble figuring out how to pitch many of her songs because they were so unique to her and her experiences.

Morris’ breakthrough hit, “My Church,” is about redemption through the power of the radio. Morris released a five-song EP, Maren Morris, last year. The album was downloaded 2 million times, thanks in large part to frequent playing of “My Church” on country radio stations across the country.
