Monster Jam – Full-Throttle Family Fun

Monster Jam

Monster Jam events take place around the globe in arenas and stadiums of various sizes. While spectators scream their approval, hundreds of Feld employees ensure driver safety, choreograph entries to hot pits and repair broken trucks on- and off-track.

Racing track consists of an intricate series of ramps with some 10-foot jumps for freestyle event trucks to use two minutes to devastate dirt crew’s work and wreck their trucks.

What is a Monster Jam?

Monster Jam events bring world-renowned driver athletes and their 12,000-pound monster trucks together for family entertainment at one location. These unique vehicles stand 10 1/2 feet tall, generate 1,500 horsepower, run on methanol fuel, and drivers use them to race or destroy junked cars while pulling wheelies or performing doughnuts – providing maximum thrills at each Monster Jam stop!

Trucks also participate in two racing events and a freestyle competition, where winners are determined by both a panel of judges and audience voting via mobile phone application.

Freestyle competitions are particularly beloved of audiences because it gives drivers a chance to show their stuff behind ramps, walls and other obstacles. While trucks cannot crush cars on track itself, static crush cars may be used around the arena floor to provide some added excitement.

How does the show work?

Monster Jam employees make sure every aspect of a show runs smoothly while fans enjoy themselves, from drivers’ safety and choreographed entry into the hot pits (where 47 trucks are staged between rounds with two trucks entering and exiting at any one time) to broken trucks on and off track, along with working with each venue individually to prepare evacuation plans and address other specific concerns specific to that location.

These trucks aren’t your standard F-150s either; these custom-built machines stand 10 1/2 feet tall, weigh 12,000 pounds, generate 1,500 horsepower and boast powerful tires that can reach 70 miles per hour.

Monster Jam drivers compete in two races: two-wheel skills challenge, donut competition and freestyle event. Fans score the freestyle event; it provides spectators with a thrilling ride as fiberglass bodies get shed, axles break or even fire breaks out during this exciting spectacle that sets Monster Jam apart from other forms of motorsports.

What is the audience like?

Monster truck shows are an absolute delight, with donuts and dirt flying everywhere imaginable from Grave Digger driver Adam Anderson’s Grave Digger competing against Bigfoot to give fans a classic Monster Jam experience.

At Monster Jam shows, there’s plenty to see and experience: from the hot pit and cold pit where trucks rest during competition; HowStuffWorks was invited into one such pit in Las Vegas at which trucks were fuelled up before embarking on two-minute freestyle runs; to fueling and repair facilities prior to competition.

Monster Jam fans are far more diverse than one might assume, thanks in no small part to women being welcome as equal competitors alongside men – something not seen elsewhere in motorsports where female race car and motocross drivers must compete separately series. There are currently 14 female drivers competing on the Monster Jam circuit; many of whom have become immensely popular among its audiences.

What are the vehicles?

Monster Jam competitions feature more than 50 trucks and use over 100 blower engines, which power their tires. Each monster truck uses specially made BKT tires with 66-inch sidewalls designed for this series, so when drivers land one from an enormous jump, their sidewalls compress up to 12 inches or more!

Each year, trucks compete in racing and freestyle competitions. Racing follows a predetermined course; freestyle allows drivers two minutes to drive over ramps and junked cars on the event floor performing stunts and tricks for fans’ scoring; the driver with the highest cumulative total wins. It is not unusual for fiberglass bodies to disintegrate during freestyle competition; crew guys are on hand to assist if anything goes awry during freestyle competition.

Experience world-class driver athletes helming monster trucks as they compete head-to-head in racing and freestyle competitions, crushing cars, flipping over, performing stunts, and crushing cars all to score points in these non-racing contests.

In just two minutes, drivers compete in an exciting freestyle competition at any event floor. Jumps, tricks and flips abound – with fiberglass bodies dislodging from axles as drivers perform jumps, tricks and flips for their audiences’ delight.

Two-Wheel Skills Challenge

Monster Jam events offer something for everyone, making every experience truly unforgettable. Fans in the arena drive the show, creating lifelong fans as they witness gravity-defying feats performed by 12 12,000-pound Monster Jam trucks racing and competing in freestyle, racing, two-wheel skills competitions – and you can vote for your favorite driver live via in-stadium fan voting on mobile devices!

Stadium Races

Monster trucks from all around the world take to the dirt for an intense competition of speed and skill, captivating audiences with breathtaking displays of gravity-defying feats performed by skilled drivers.

Track designers place safety as their highest priority during each Monster Jam event, creating a protected zone within each stadium which is cleared of spectators during performance. Monster Jam employees monitor driver safety closely as well as oversee entry to hot pits (47 trucks are staged between rounds with two entering/exiting constantly), attend broken trucks both on- and off-track and make sure fans receive value for their money.

As stunts become more daring, truck designs adapt accordingly; some modifications require minor tweaks so drivers can keep pace with competition while observing safety standards set forth by the United States Hot Rod Association. Yet regardless of this ever-evolving nature of events like this one, everyone remains thoroughly entertained!

Freestyle Contest

Drivers competing in freestyle competition can showcase their talents by crushing cars or performing impressive tricks such as flying through the air or launching themselves off ramps. Trucks may also destroy obstacles on the course, such as destructible buildings and drones.

Freestyle was initially created as an encore for fans whose favorite trucks had been eliminated in racing. Once racing had concluded, fans would cheer for their preferred vehicle and their chosen truck would receive credit with the highest score.

Monster Jam competitors must now achieve both top qualifying times in racing and an impressive freestyle score in order to be victorious at each event. World Finals serve as a highlight, while exhibition shows continue through much of the year.

Brianna Mahon, driving her signature bright aqua Whiplash Monster Jam vehicle, emphasizes that nothing about Monster Jam is scripted and crowds become excited when female drivers enter competitions such as Monster Jam. Mahon joined this sport after her professional motocross career was cut short due to injury.

Finale

The Monster Jam World Finals marks the climax of every Monster Jam season and serves as its signature event. Here, series champions from both Stadium and Arena Series compete to claim one of four world championships across Racing, Freestyle and High Jump disciplines. These winners automatically qualify for entry; additional drivers may earn themselves entry through participating in Monster Jam World Tour events that grant automatic invitations to compete at these finals.

This World Finals would see the return of the American flag-styled safety tarps, last seen at World Finals VII in 2006. Weston Anderson would run his multi-colored Grave Digger truck as an homage to his Bog Hog mud truck and Avenger made its first appearance with its special orange body to celebrate 25 years since their founding. There would be 23 trucks competing freestyle as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Hot Wheels vehicles were damaged during racing crashes.

Some trucks feature weapons and firearms, but due to safety concerns they are rarely used during events. Gunslinger was renamed Slinger after its use of guns was brought up during an event; Metal Mulisha and Soldier Fortune have had their firearms removed as well – this censorship has not gone over well with fans as some see it as disrespect for the sport.

Tracks

Stadium and arena spectators are treated to an unforgettable show as Monster Jam drivers push their 12,000-pound trucks to the limit in freestyle, two-wheel skills, donuts and racing competitions. These world-class male and female athletes possessing both physical strength and mental stamina have perfected these machines resulting in breathtaking action that amazes audiences at every event.

Truck designs continue to change as drivers discover ways to dazzle audiences with thrilling performances and add risky elements into their performances. While basic trucks are designed for long-term durability, certain components may require replacement from time to time.

Bring binoculars and wear comfortable shoes for the best viewing experience at the Pit Party, which can get quite busy at times. Also plan on arriving early to secure yourself a good seat; also expect that shows may last an extended amount of time; drivers often sign autographs and wave to fans after each performance as part of their fan service experience; plus audience voting with smartphones will determine who wins!

All fans aged two or over must purchase a ticket.

Trucks roar and crash, and crowds enjoy it immensely. It’s controlled chaos that the drivers revel in.

Track Design

Monster Jam has come a long way since its humble roots as sideshows at mud-bog events, tractor pulls and motocross races. Today it reaches more than 30 countries through multiple tours with multiple tours on any given tour day – and while many may not consider a sports league supporting diversity on its track [source: Feld]. However, Feld Entertainment claims this goal as part of their mission statement in reaching new audiences and growing the sport [source: Feld].

Monster Jam’s arena and stadium tracks are custom designed for each venue, drawing upon over four decades of experience to craft an arena/stadium track that maximizes racing action while creating fan engagement.

Monster Jam drivers are carefully vetted before being chosen to pilot certain trucks, with Brianna Mahon (2015 Rookie of the Year winner who drives Whiplash) serving as an example of how this organization accepts female drivers despite skewed gender imbalance in other motorsports such as Formula 1. Monster Jam’s inclusive culture makes this possible and vice versa; unlike most other forms of motorsport where men tend to dominate due to strength or endurance advantages, Monster Jam promotes gender-blind racing.

Freestyle Exhibitions

Experience thrilling family fun as world-class athletes compete in high-flying, freestyle and racing exhibitions. Witness drivers like Grave Digger, Megalodon and El Toro Loco push themselves beyond their limits with breathtaking Freestyle, Skills, Donuts and Racing competitions.

Freestyle driving allows each driver a set time and place on an arena floor or stadium dirt to demonstrate their creativity and daring. They may crush cars, destroy buses and vans or perform other impressive stunts on display.

At the conclusion of each freestyle run, a score is given to each truck and the one receiving the most crowd cheering is declared the winner of competition. This method was utilized early in Monster Jam and led to some debate as it allowed trucks that were more popular with their audience to win freestyle more frequently than other competing trucks.

Fans can view the show from safety barriers, though ear protection is advised due to high noise levels. Most events also feature a Pit Party where fans can meet drivers and observe these massive vehicles up close.

Racing

Monster Jam racing pits competing trucks against one another on an obstacle-laden track. Winners move forward until a final round determines who becomes champion.

Tubular steel spaceframe chassis support the colorful fiberglass bodies on each truck. Most teams utilize PEI (Dan Patrick’s) or Carrol Racing Design (CRD) chassis. Each driver is protected in their own custom roll cage with an on/off switch enabling them to control engine operations at any time.

Since its debut, Monster Jam events have generated speculations of scripted events; this perception has only been strengthened by using professional wrestler-esque names for trucks and drivers in each show.

Front and rear lockers ensure power remains evenly distributed to all four wheels if one breaks, providing added peace of mind for drivers.

Monster Jam is a family-friendly event designed to draw children’s interest in truck culture into full fandom, while taking safety seriously at each venue through evacuation plans and other needs specific to that location. Monster Jam employees monitor racing and freestyle events, choreograph entry into its hot pits (where two trucks enter and leave every round), attend to broken vehicles on- and off-track as well as ensure safety for drivers.

Monster Jam offers family entertainment like no other sport can. World-class driver athletes drive iconic trucks that smash cars while competing in various disciplines of competition like racing, two-wheel skills and freestyle.

Trucks

Monster Jam drivers navigate powerful trucks in Freestyle and Racing competitions, equipped with safety features such as roll cages and seats that conform to each driver. Each truck also includes a remote ignition interrupter that will shut off its engine if an event causes someone to be thrown from their seat – devices designed to protect drivers at all times.

Drivers for Monster Jam(r) are selected through talent scouting and trained at “Monster Jam University,” where they receive instruction on vehicle operation, competition strategy, public relations and public speaking skills. In order to be competitive in this job, drivers require high fitness levels as well as strong motivation.

Held an hour before event start times, these family-friendly activities allow visitors to get up close with them for autographs and take photographs.

Freestyle competitions

Monster Jam events feature a wide array of entertainment elements, such as racing and freestyle competitions between Monster trucks. Drivers trained as world-class athletes possess both physical strength and mental stamina necessary for controlling these 12,000-pound machines, and event organizers design unique track elements at each venue.

Freestyle contestants have two minutes to perform a combination of jumps and tricks during a freestyle contest, such as driving over ramps or junked cars and performing stunts such as wheelies or nose wheelies. An audience scores each run; the driver with the highest score wins the freestyle competition.

Dennis Anderson, designer of the Grave Digger monster truck, pioneered this idea for freestyle competition at Monster Jam shows. Since its conception, 22 freestyle events have taken place across America since its debut.

Safety

Monster Jam truck drivers must wear fireproof suits, helmets and safety harnesses when operating their trucks in competitions. Each of the Monster Jam trucks are also fitted with three kill switches in case of any emergencies; most use either Patrick Enterprises or Carroll Racing Design models for construction.

Drivers can perform various stunts, including car crushing, one-on-one races and freestyle. Each event offers something new for children of all ages to experience; their engine noise may even cause permanent hearing damage if left unmanaged properly.

Feld Motor Sports, the company behind Monster Jam, works closely with each venue on evacuation plans and other safety concerns that may be specific to that location. Toddler ear protection should always be brought along for events to keep noise levels down; additionally it’s advised that regular breaks be taken from sound levels.
